Year 5 Autumn 2025
Year 5 Autumn Term Overview
This Autumn, Year 5 will be diving into an exciting range of topics across the curriculum!
English
We are exploring Outlaw by Michael Morpurgo, which will inspire us to create our very own legends by the end of the half-term. Along the way, we’ll develop our reading skills, build rich vocabulary, and practise using powerful descriptive techniques in our writing.
Maths
In maths, we have been focusing on place value of numbers up to six digits, making sure we can read, write, compare, and order large numbers with confidence. We are also learning different strategies for addition and subtraction, helping us choose the most efficient method to solve problems.
Science
Our science topic is Animals Including Humans. We will be learning all about the human life cycle and will explore how humans grow and change from birth through to old age, and compare this with the life cycles of other animals. We will discover the fascinating stages of development, including childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, and will consider how our bodies and needs change at each stage.
We will also look at how humans reproduce, how babies develop, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in supporting growth and development.
PSHE
This term’s PSHE theme is Body Image. We will think about self-esteem, how we see ourselves, and how to respect and celebrate differences in others.
P.E.
In P.E., we are developing our teamwork and tactical skills through invasion games such as football, netball, and hockey.
Geography
Our geography question is: Why is California so thirsty? We’ll investigate the challenges of water supply, climate, and how people adapt to living in such a dry environment.
History
In history, we are travelling back in time to explore The Round City of Baghdad, discovering why it was once one of the most important cities in the world and what made it thrive as a centre of learning and culture.
