Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Primary School

Year 2 Autumn 2025

RE

We have been exploring Branch 1 of the RED curriculum, ‘Creation & Covenant’. Our journey began with trying to understand what a covenant is. We now understand this to be a very strong promise.

Our journey continued as we revisited the story of Noah’s Ark and focused on the pledge God made to us all. He sent a rainbow to remind us of His promise. We made our own rainbows and created our own pledges.

We then looked at the Sacrament of Baptism, and our very clever Year 2 children made a wonderful connection — water is used to cleanse sins, just as the water in Noah’s Ark cleansed the world of sin. We were so impressed with this beautiful reflection. We also thought about how, in Baptism, a candle is given to allow the child to carry the Light of the Lord out into the world. To mirror this, we made beautiful lanterns.

Having gained a deeper understanding of the treasure of God’s creation, we began to think about how the planet has been gifted to us — not to keep, but to steward. We are here to look after it. Year 2 decided that we are not doing a great job of caring for God’s creation and that we must do more. We even explored how we ourselves are part of the Lord’s creation, and how important animals are too.

Through Psalm 139, we explored how God truly knows us — and what a blessing this is: to be known, to be loved, and to be cherished.

Year 2 Branch 1: Creation & Covenant

Enjoy our weekly highlights...

Week 6:  Mental Health Awareness Day saw us adding a touch of yellow to our classroom with our bright and sunny Kindness Chain.  We each wrote on chains how we had helped people feel happy.  It made us feel really cheerful doing it.  It was a great start to our Friday.  Look at how happy we are!

Week 5:  PSHE - Weddings and Marriages
We discussed what a wedding is, what a marriage is, why people get married and looked at a range of marriage practices.  We enjoyed acting out the Catholic traditions including the lighting of the unity candle and the binding of the couples hands, a practise known as Veni Creator Spiritus.

Week 4:  Combining Geography with Art, we explored our glorious school surroundings to see what our local natural habitat looks like!  We collected natural materials that drew our attention and, once back from our adventure, created unique temporary art pieces.  We photographed them and created a digital archive for you to enjoy below!

Week 3:  What is a statement?  How do you know the difference between a question and a statement?  We made up a call and response to our favourite K-Pop Demon Hunters song to help us remember what a statement is.

Week 2:  Our second week at school saw us starting our Literacy topic, Stories with Familiar Settings.  We are exploring this through the short story, The Pirates Next Door.  Year 2 started by analysing the front cover to develop our inference skills.  We made predictions about what might happen based on what we could see.  We can't wait to read the book, to see if we are right.

Week 1:  As part of our Arts Week we learned about the apparition of Our Lady of Banneux.  We created a winter tree to feature as part of a large art work we are making with Year 1 for the school hall.  Each child had one piece of brown paper that they were asked to crumple and tear.  They added them one by one to build the tree.
